Gasoline vs propane generator: which fuel is better for backup power?

Propane gives you a cylinder-based second fuel path and avoids keeping gasoline in the generator’s tank between uses. Dual fuel is the most flexible when both fuels are realistically available—but fuel choice never changes the outdoor-only carbon-monoxide rule.

Compare two watt ratings on a dual-fuel model
Manufacturers publish separate gasoline and propane ratings because output can change with fuel. For example, Champion lists 3,500 running watts on gasoline and 3,150 on propane for one 4,250-starting-watt model. Use the figure for the fuel you will actually run.
Availability matters more than a theoretical winner
A fuel is useful only if you can obtain, transport and store it lawfully before an outage. Build the plan around realistic local supply, safe approved containers or cylinders, and the manufacturer’s storage instructions.
Dual fuel adds choice, not simultaneous capacity
A dual-fuel selector normally lets the engine operate on either gasoline or propane. Do not combine fuels or switch while running unless the exact manual says how. Two fuel connections do not increase the generator’s electrical output.
Every combustion generator has the same CO boundary
CPSC says portable generators must remain outside, at least 20 feet from the home, with exhaust directed away from openings. A cleaner-looking fuel, quieter engine or automatic CO shutoff does not make indoor or garage operation safe.

Dual-fuel output can change with the fuel. Compare the documented running watts, runtime and restart plan for each fuel separately.
A 1,200W load uses 67% of an 1,800W petrol rating, but 75% of a 1,600W LPG rating. The exact manual still decides runtime and allowed operation.

Many dual-fuel models list lower running watts on propane, but the difference is model-specific. Compare the two official ratings rather than applying one percentage to every generator.
Is propane safer than gasoline indoors?+
No combustion generator is safe indoors. Propane-fueled generators also make carbon monoxide and must follow the same outside-only placement rule.
Does dual fuel mean I can use gasoline and propane together?+
Usually it means selecting one fuel or the other. Follow the exact model’s selector and changeover instructions; never improvise simultaneous fuel use.
Which fuel is best for a long outage?+
