Wuppertal Schwebebahn resumes service after power outage

Wuppertal’s Schwebebahn resumed scheduled operation around 05:00 on 28 October 2026 after a power interruption and passenger evacuation, WDR reports, citing WSW. Technicians restored the rail power connection around 04:00. The later account attributes the interruption to a short circuit in the electrical line at Völklinger Straße; 24 passengers were evacuated without injuries.

Status of this incident

Current status unconfirmed

Last known status: restored, according to the source · WDR, citing WSW, reports Schwebebahn service resumed around 05:00 on 28 October after rail power restoration around 04:00; no household outage established.

Source moment: Oct 28, 2026, 07:38 AM UTC (08:38 AM local time)

In 20 seconds

  1. The fire service says a power loss prevented towing of the immobilised Schwebebahn.

  2. Crews used a turntable ladder from a bridge; the fire service reports 12 fire and rescue personnel deployed.

  3. WDR, citing WSW, reports the rail power connection restored around 04:00 and scheduled service resumed around 05:00 on 28 October.

Ladder evacuation after towing was prevented

Feuerwehr Wuppertal says WSW reported the immobilised Schwebebahn at 23:35. The sudden loss of power meant that towing could not proceed. Emergency crews instead removed the passengers using a turntable ladder positioned from a bridge. The fire service says 12 fire and rescue personnel took part in the response.

WDR reports 24 passengers evacuated without injuries. Its later account puts the evacuation at approximately 40 minutes, while its earlier account described an emergency operation lasting approximately one hour. Those are different descriptions of the response, rather than interchangeable estimates of the electrical interruption. Neither establishes the exact outage duration.

Short circuit reported; scheduled rail service resumed

The night-of-27-October date is inferred from the reporting’s Tuesday-night chronology; the initial accounts were published on 28 October 2026. The 23:35 time is the reported WSW notification, rather than a verified start time for the electricity loss. The exact electrical onset remains unknown. Earlier reporting left the cause and service resumption unclear; the later WDR account adds an attributed explanation and recovery times.

Citing WSW, WDR says a short circuit in the electrical line at Völklinger Straße caused the interruption. It reports that technicians restored the rail power connection around 04:00 and scheduled Schwebebahn operation resumed around 05:00 on 28 October, in Berlin local time. These are approximate times. The recovery concerns the railway: the reports do not establish a household electricity outage or citywide power failure. The 24 passengers must not be described as electricity customers.

General preparation resources

For general preparation, the grid-down essentials guide covers supplies for electricity interruptions, while the internet backup guide discusses connectivity backup. These are household planning resources. They provide no evidence about the Schwebebahn electrical fault, the evacuation or current rail services.
