Fort power outage: partial restoration after overhead-line repairs
City Power reports electricity restored to parts of Braamfontein, Doornfontein, Hillbrow and Johannesburg’s CBD following the Fort overhead-line fault. Its 19 October update says repairs are complete, but final testing and assessment remain for other customers. Full restoration is expected that evening only if the tests go to plan.

Partial restoration has been reported; the update does not confirm recovery for every connection in the named areas.
City Power suspects encroaching trees, now cleared, and says the fault was not linked to last week’s fire.
An evening restoration expectation remains conditional on final testing; no completed full restoration is confirmed.
What changed after the Fort repairs
The operator’s latest statement says repairs to the overhead-line fault have been completed. City Power suspects encroaching trees were involved and says those trees have been cleared. This is the utility’s suspected explanation, rather than an independently established cause. The same notice expressly separates this fault from the fire last week; a shared substation name does not establish that the two events are the same incident.
The morning statement dates the reported outage to 18 October and names Hillbrow, Braamfontein, Doornfontein, Berea and parts of Johannesburg CBD, including Jeppe and Klein streets. The exact start time remains unknown. The later restoration report identifies parts of Braamfontein, Doornfontein, Hillbrow and the CBD. These area names do not establish that every property lost electricity or that every connection has now recovered.

Customers still awaiting final tests
City Power lists the Civic Centre, Constitutional Court, Florence Nursing Hospital and National Health Laboratory Services among customers requiring final testing and assessment. It also names Edith Cavell, Klein, De Korte, Melle, Jorissen, Siemens and Sam Hancock streets. The statement does not establish an outage at every building on those streets or independently demonstrate disruption to patient care, court proceedings or laboratory services.
Full restoration is an expectation for the evening of 19 October, conditional on final testing going according to plan. It is not confirmation that those tests have finished or that all remaining customers have been reconnected. No verified affected-customer total or complete address-level footprint is available, and the time of actual final restoration remains unknown.
Planning for essential devices

The internet backup guide covers connectivity planning, while the outage essentials guide helps organise basic equipment. These resources support backup planning; they cannot verify the state of an individual connection or predict completion of City Power’s tests.
