Home-outage freezer guide

How long will a power station run a freezer?

Estimate freezer backup time from the appliance’s EnergyGuide annual kWh or a measured average, then verify compressor startup power separately.

Quick answer
A 1,000Wh power station with 800Wh planned usable energy runs an illustrative 50W average freezer load for about 16 hours, or a 100W average for 8 hours.

Compressor startup and warm-room conditions remain separate limits.

Use annual kWh for the long-term average

Multiply the EnergyGuide annual kWh by 1,000 and divide by 8,760 to estimate average watts. This helps with battery energy, but it smooths out compressor starts and defrost cycles.

Keep startup power separate

A freezer may average only tens of watts while still needing a much larger short burst when its compressor starts. Confirm the exact model’s starting requirement and test it on the station’s ordinary inverter output.

An outage is not a laboratory test

Room temperature, lid or door opening, warm contents, frost and automatic defrost can raise consumption. Pre-freeze contents, keep the freezer closed and preserve battery reserve for uncertainty.

A large enough battery can still be the wrong setup when its output, cable or regional version does not match.

Questions people ask

Practical answers

Can a 500Wh power station run a freezer overnight?

At 80% usable energy, 500Wh provides 400Wh. That calculates to 8 hours at a 50W average, but startup compatibility and actual compressor duty still have to be tested.

How do I convert annual freezer kWh into watts?

Multiply annual kWh by 1,000 and divide by 8,760. For example, 350kWh per year corresponds to about 40W as a long-term average.

Is the freezer wattage label enough?

Not always. A label may show rated or maximum electrical input rather than a long-term average, while annual kWh does not reveal the startup peak. Use both kinds of information for different checks.
