What does a 5 kVA inverter actually tell you?

kVA is apparent power; kW is real power. The product rating and power-factor conditions determine their relationship, while battery Wh determines stored energy.

Planning estimate only. Real runtime varies with temperature, load behavior, battery condition and conversion path.

Use your own watts, hours and reserve.

A realistic input gives you a useful range instead of a false promise.

Separate three labels

kVA describes apparent power. kW describes real output power. kWh or Wh describes energy over time. A 5 kVA label alone does not tell you how many hours your fan and fridge will run, and it does not automatically mean a 5 kW continuous output.

Use the documented power factor

For a rating specified at power factor 0.8, 5 kVA × 0.8 equals 4 kW. This is an illustration, not a universal 5 kVA product specification. Check the manufacturer continuous-watt limit and any temperature, load-type or surge-duration conditions.

Size the battery independently

Running a 500 W average load for four hours needs 2 kWh delivered to the load before accounting for conversion losses and reserve. An inverter capable of 4 kW does not provide that energy by itself. Use the battery capacity and usable-energy limits in the planner.

Compare complete quotations

When checking a 5 kVA inverter price in Nigeria, separate the inverter, battery bank, panels, installation and protection equipment. Confirm nominal DC voltage and supported battery chemistry. Keep a date and model identifier with each quotation; this page does not list verified live Nigerian prices.

Before you buy

Check the complete power path.

A large enough battery can still be the wrong setup when its output, cable or regional version does not match.

  1. Measured load and simultaneous output
  2. Battery energy and usable reserve
  3. Exact voltage, frequency and complete cable path
  4. Dated model, package, warranty and seller evidence

Practical answers

Is this a recommendation to buy a locally available model?

No. The calculations and source-region catalogues help define the requirement. Exact Nigerian variants, stock, delivery and approved purchase links have separate checks.

Regional specifications and calculated matches

Separate documented specifications from calculated matches.

Products shows source-region technical references. No Nigerian model has yet passed the exact-variant and photograph checks for calculated recommendations. A calculated match is not a compatibility guarantee or a purchase recommendation. Enter your actual device load and check its connections and instructions.
