How long will a power station run a home refrigerator?
Estimate home-refrigerator backup time from the appliance’s own annual kWh or measured average load, then check compressor startup power separately.

The inverter must also handle the compressor’s startup demand, which cannot be inferred from annual energy use.

Comparison table
| Average refrigerator load | Energy per day | Planned runtime | Interpretation |
|---|---|---|---|
| 50W | 1,200Wh | 16 hours | Efficient or low-duty example |
| 75W | 1,800Wh | 10.7 hours | Moderate average example |
| 100W | 2,400Wh | 8 hours | Conservative planning example |
| 150W | 3,600Wh | 5.3 hours | High-duty or hot-room example |
Planning estimate only. Real runtime varies with temperature, load behavior, battery condition and conversion path.

Use your own watts, hours and reserve.
A realistic input gives you a useful range instead of a false promise.

for your choice?
Convert annual kWh into an hourly average
If the label shows annual energy, multiply by 1,000 to get watt-hours and divide by 8,760 hours. That average helps size stored energy, but it smooths out compressor cycles and defrost events.
Startup power is a separate test
A refrigerator can have modest average consumption and still draw much more when the compressor starts. Use the model manual, label or a suitable meter and confirm that the station’s ordinary inverter output supports it.
Outage conditions change consumption
A warm room, frequent door opening, warm food, an ice maker and an active defrost cycle can shorten runtime. Pre-cool the refrigerator and test the exact setup before depending on it.

Check the complete power path.
A large enough battery can still be the wrong setup when its output, cable or regional version does not match.
- Exact refrigerator model and regional voltage
- Annual kWh or measured average load
- Compressor startup watts
- Station continuous and surge behaviour
- Enough reserve for warm conditions
- A completed unplugged test before an outage
Practical answers
Can a 500Wh power station run a refrigerator?
It may, if its inverter handles the compressor startup. At 80% usable energy, 500Wh provides 400Wh: about 8 hours at a 50W average or 4 hours at 100W.
Can I calculate runtime from the EnergyGuide label?
Yes for a long-term average: annual kWh × 1,000 ÷ 8,760 gives average watts. Keep startup power and unusually hot outage conditions as separate checks.
Why did the refrigerator fail even though the battery was large enough?
Stored energy and inverter output are different limits. The compressor may ask for more starting power than the station can supply, or the station may use a protective shutdown mode.
