Quick answer
A 500Wh station with 80% usable energy provides about 6.2 hours at a 65W average load, or 4 hours at 100W.

A laptop charger’s maximum rating is not always its average draw, so measure the complete desk when accuracy matters.

Planning estimate only. Real runtime varies with temperature, load behavior, battery condition and conversion path.

The charger label is a ceiling

A 100W charger can supply up to 100W but the laptop may draw less when its battery is full or workload is light. A plug-in power meter gives a better whole-desk average.

USB-C can avoid an inverter step

Direct USB-C Power Delivery may be more efficient than powering the laptop's AC brick. The station, cable and laptop must all support the required power profile.

Include everything on the desk

An external monitor, mobile hotspot, phone and speakers can equal or exceed the laptop draw. Calculate the combined average load rather than the computer alone.

A large enough battery can still be the wrong setup when its output, cable or regional version does not match.

Practical answers

Can a 100W USB-C port power any laptop?

No. Both devices must negotiate a compatible USB Power Delivery profile, and some workstations require more than 100W or use a proprietary connector.

Does charging the laptop battery waste power?

Battery-to-battery conversion introduces losses, but it can also provide a useful buffer. For planning, measure the setup in the state in which you actually work.

Can USB-C now exceed 100W?

Yes. USB-IF states that USB PD 3.1 extended supported power up to 240W, but the source, cable and device must all support the higher-power specification.
